The wrestler weight class certification clinic is designed for high school wrestlers.  The objective of the clinic is to provide high school wrestlers with a scientifically reliable and valid method to determine their minimal effective weight class certification. By utilizing a variety of scientific methodologies of anthropometry, high school wrestlers are assured of being placed in a safe, yet effective weight class. High school wrestling is a highly competitive sport where it is frequently believed that if a wrestler is able to lower his weight class certification, he may be more successful.  Thus, SportsMedicine of Atlanta, in an effort to curtail unsafe weight reduction, has devised the weight class certification clinic.

By using bony skeletal calipers, wrestlers are measure for hip width, chest width, chest depth, ankle width, and standing height.  These measures are then put into a computer programmed with complex formulae, and a reliable and valid predicted minimal weight classification is identified.  The wrestlers are measured at the beginning of the wrestling season. Subsequently, results are given to coaches and parents. Wrestlers and coaches may challenge the weight class certification, and a re-examination may be performed.  However, consistent with the American College of SportsMedicine guidelines, a wrestler should not be allowed to wrestle any weight classification lower than what the medical staff has predicted to be a safe minimum.
