Although everyone has experienced it at one time or another, pain is difficult to define and describe. When a client has undergone traditional measures to control pain (such as traditional physical therapy or various surgeries), it is not uncommon for pain to still persist. The unpleasant experience of pain that persists after traditional measure have failed frequently causes anxiety and a multitude of other related problems. Thus, SportsMedicine of Atlanta has a pain control clinic designed as an alternative approach. Our pain control approach involves the control of pain by teaching the sufferer to control those factors which frequently increase suffering and disability. Initially, all clients receive a thorough evaluation that begins with a history of illness, including a description of the pain and the causes and the consequences. Since only the client knows what the pain is like, our staff is trained to empathize and carefully listen to our clients. An important part of the initial assessment consists of a physical examination. The latest in testing and technology are applied so that an accurate diagnosis can be made. Based upon an accurate diagnosis, a treatment program is outlined that includes the innovative measures bypassing previous attempts that utilized traditional measures. It is the philosophy of our pain control clinic that so called "pain killer drugs" be utilized as little as possible. Our staff has been able to demonstrate a substantial improvement and decrease in suffering of many patients when the intake of depressant pain killing drugs are discontinued. Finally, the professionals of our pain clinic recognize that pain affects one's entire family, and so often they are involved in the treatment process. |
